There are manuals out there, I found a few suppliers when I was looking for 785 info for those links I posted.Just do a few keyword searches on youre browser bar, youll find some. Also what temperature thermostat would you recommend, it runs about 150 right now and I think that might be a little too low.
Cummins Engine Location Manuals Out ThereAs far as the thermostat, 180 should be fine if you arent going to work it, might help seal the rings a little better too. When I started most Cummins that I saw were set up with 160 thermostats.Never really understood why, but I do know that running the short hills up here, they never dropped below 180 unless you were bobtailing in cold weather,lol.John. Cummins Engine Location Serial Number Will BeIf it was built in the 60s the serial number will be 6 digits. Are you sure this engine is a 903 and not a V8-785 I thought the 903s showed up around 69 or 70. Cummins Engine Location Series Versatile FarmConsolidated Freightways had a bunch of them and they were also used in the 900 series Versatile farm tractor. If I understand right the number should be under the driverside cylinder head next to the bell housing. I know it is not the number but I found a 5 digit number on the bell housing. If this engine were to be a 785 where should I look for the number. On any engine, a common place for numbers is below or behind the head mating surface, usually small stamped number on a portion of the block thats been machined flat and smooth.Sometimes on a Vee engine the numbers will be at the very front or very rear top edge of the block between the heads. It wont take much grease to hide them no matter where they are.Steam clean it or grab a rag and some degreaser ( thinner, brake cleaner, ect. John. I ordered a 903 thermostat and the one that came in dont look anything like the one in my truck. I have looked hard for the serial number and finally found it, it was under number 8 cylinder head about a quarter of an inch by 1 inch long and it reads (483566) and since the last numbers are 66 that helps me believe its the original motor that came with the truck. I hope if the engine is a 265 I can get parts for it, the 903 is hard enough, well almost imposible. I started to take out the thermostat but thought I would wait till I find out some more info. I would hate to tear up a working thermostat that I cant even get, if thats the case 150 degrees is better than a missing thermostat lol. If anyone could help me with that serial number as to which enigne I have it would be much appreciated. Has a four speed main and a four speed aux with low, under, intermediate, and direct. What little I have found out on the net says that 1965 might have been the first year for this motor and cummins didnt produce it long after that, maybe a couple of years. ![]()
